JOHN REILLY
On the 30th of November 2009, the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund lost a dear friend and colleague. John started this website which he built and maintained for us. John gave up his spare time (no doubt missing a round of golf) to research and write all the articles and add pictures to the website. He worked hard taking the official pictures at the outings, as well as being in fancy dress, decorating his taxi and participating in the day itself. Last year with Willie Broon Shoes White as Fred Flintstone and John as Barney Rubble they had a full taxi with a family of 5 children from Kelbourne School. John was a keen golfer, so there was no surprise when we started our Annual Fun Golf Day that he was the first to volunteer his services. The Committee and everyone associated with the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund probably didn’t realise how much hard work John contributed to our Charity, until we lost him. So much so that we have decided to have a trophy put up in John's name that will be played for at our Annual Fun Golf Day, starting this year at Ralston on the 10th of May 2010.
John was a great person who will be sadly missed by all of us.
This years outing took place on Wednesday 17th June. You can read about and see some of the pictures from another great day out... click here...

There is no doubt that the most effective public relations job in the Taxi business is the Kiddies Outing Fund and it is interesting to know how it all began. Early in 1945 three taxi drivers organised a bus run which proved very successful.
They were R. McLaren, J. Sampson and W. Campbell. It was found after the bus run that they had some cash in hand and they decided to utilise this money to give some invalid children a day at the coast, and that very year, with the aid of some volunteers, they conveyed children from Eastpark Home in their taxis to Saltcoats.
This proved so popular that it was decided to make it an annual event. Gathering funds was not a problem as all the taxi drivers contributed to making the outing a success. Around this time the best known band in Glasgow was "Billy McGregor and the Gaybirds from the Barrowland Ballroom and they were asked to help the Children's Outing which they did, wholeheartedly. Over the past 64 years, thousands of taxi drivers have donated their time and effort to make the "Outing Fund" the annual success that it is. Most of the drivers don fancy dress costumes, much to the delight of the children and the people who line the route through Glasgow and in Troon itself.
The effort that goes into "dressing" the Taxis has to be seen to be believed and we hope that the images on this site will give you an insight into the work that is involved. Our sincere thanks to the drivers who make a lot of special children very happy indeed.
